Key Technology and Application of Enzyme Catalysis in Fast-growing Hardwood Pulp and Papermaking Process

China is the world’s largest papermaking country with total output exceeding 25% of global production. However, China’s timber resources are scarce. Therefore, the full utilization of fast-growing hardwood resources and the adoption of highly efficient clean pulp and papermaking technology are fundamental solutions to the papermaking industry in China. Resources and environmental issues. In response to this problem, the laboratory uses modern biotechnology as the main means to reform and innovate the traditional pulp and paper technology: to reduce refining energy consumption, eliminate toxic pollutants, stabilize pulp whiteness, improve pulp quality, improve papermaking performance and R&D. In terms of high-grade paper-based new materials, high-efficiency and high-value use of domestic timber resources has been realized.

The project's refining and bleaching, chemical swelling, softening and cellulose protection, physical purification technology and equipment, bio-deuteration and purification, biological wet-end control, pulp synergy and high-grade paper-based materials and other technologies in Shandong Chenming Paper Co., Ltd. has been applied with a total production scale of 400,000 tons/year. In addition, the project also focused on the research of key technologies for pulping and papermaking of sub-grade raw materials such as wood and other wood processing residues, and achieved historic breakthroughs and reached internationally advanced levels. This technology has been promoted in more than 20 high-yield pulp production lines such as Huatai Group Co., Ltd., Shandong Sun Paper Co., Ltd., Shandong Century Sunshine Paper Group, Shandong Henglian Investment Co., Ltd., and Longkou Yulong Paper Company. The application produced a high-quality, high-yield pulp for fast-growing wood and was successfully used for copying electrostatic copy paper, high-grade light paper, paper cup base paper, and anti-counterfeiting paper, and achieved significant economic and social benefits. Since 2005, the project has been promoted and applied by more than 20 key enterprises such as Chenming Paper Group, one of the top ten papermaking enterprises in the world, and domestic leading enterprise Sun Paper Industry Co., Ltd., etc., and has produced high-quality wood pulp using bio-enzyme catalysis technology. In the production of advanced paper-based materials, high-speed and high-value utilization of fast-growing hardwood materials has been achieved. In the period from 2012 to 2014, only the completed units of the project have achieved a total of 13.01 billion yuan in new sales and 2.56 billion yuan in profits, which has produced significant economic and social benefits. This project has been granted 31 national invention patents, published 166 papers, published 3 monographs, and trained 36 graduate students.
